In November of 2020 I purchased two new Merlin guitar dulcimers manufactured by the Canadian company Seagull, known for their handmade solid wood stringed instruments. They are a variation of the traditional dulcimer made popular in the ‘70s by musicians like Joni Mitchell on her iconic “Blue” album.

These 4-string instruments are key bound, or musically speaking, diatonic. One Merlin is in the key of G-major and the other is in D-major. While developing a two fingered picking style, I wrote four new instrumental songs in a kind of nouveau folk style: two in D-major, one in G-major and the fourth in an alternate tuning of E-minor (G-major's relative minor).

I assembled them all into a four-song suite that pays tribute to my wonderful home county (one of the ten best in the entire country, according to the Movoto real estate site!) and titled the piece, the “Chester County Suite.” Those familiar with the area should recognize the individual song titles as being associated with the county.

It was recorded entirely at Rosemill Studio from late summer to the end of 2021. Mixed and mastered in 2022. Although each song is rather short in length, the entire suite clocks in at around ten minutes total. While I think the songs stand on their own when played individually, I hope you'll carve out some time to listen to the whole piece straight through as intended. Enjoy the journey!
